第８８日目：【A-Tiger】SSDはSoftware RAIDに挑戦となりそうです

今日の日記も少ない時間で書いていますので、ちょっと短めです。
SAS版TigerサーバとSSD版Tigerサーバについてですが、PolywellからSAS版について
Sam社長から直々にSOSとも言える報告がありました。
えーと、日本語約も合わせて乗せたいのですが、本業の方(T-Bananaサーバ作り)が
ちょっと忙しいので、英文の原文をそのまま掲載します。

There is no hardware RAID solution for the FreeBSD yet.
We have tried both LSI and Adpatec and both of them don't work well under the
FreeBSD yet but they do work under Linux.
The on-board RAID we have been using in the past are not hardware RAID,
they are all software RAID by utilizing the MB CPU to calculating the RAID,
there is no performance difference for two drive RAID because the CPU
utilization for RAID-1 is less than 3% and it does not affect the performance at all.
Each drive are on a different channel of SAS Controller and each channel of SAS
can handle up to 600Mbit / sec data transfer, but each hard drive can only do
less than 100Mbit /sec.
so the performance bottleneck is not on the RAID or on the controller,
but it's on the drive's own I/O.
If you want to go hardware RAID, you have to consider to switch to Linux
rather than FreeBSD.
but again, I can tell you there is no performance gain at all unless you are doing
large storage by putting 16 hard drives running on RAID-5,
then the hardware RAID will be utilized its feature.
The current configuration we recommend by using OS RAID gives the best
is this allows performance and value to your customer, and the most important
the customer to manage the RAID at the OS level rather than shutting down
the system and boot into the RAID Controller BIOS Mode to manage the RAID.
If the customer has found a hardware RAID solution which works under FreeBSD,
please let us know, we can change the configuration per their need.

うーん、Intelだけでなく色んなメーカーのマザーボードを試してハードウェアRAIDに
挑戦してもらいましたが、Polywellの方では何ともし難かったようです。
それにしても、「ハードウェアRAIDを利用したいんならFreeBSDは止めて、Linuxを
使えば」という報告を受けとって、個人的に残念でなりません。
FreeBSDは決して「問題のあるOS」ではないんですよ・・・
これだけ挑戦してもらってハード側で解決できなかったので、ちょっと('A`)の方で
ソフトウェアRAIDに挑戦してみます。(今までやった事無いんですが・・・・・)
とりあえず、PIEでOSをインストールしてサーバをオンラインにしてもらう様に
お願いしました。サーバがオンラインになったら、SSH経由でハードスペックなどを
調べてみる予定です。まずは触ってみないと、ね。
あ、あとSAS版Tigerサーバですが、NICが認識されないという状況になっていて、
オンボードのNICが壊れたのか、OSインストール時にネットワークの設定が誤って
しまったのかを現在調査しているところです。こちらの方は来週にでも遠隔で
触れるようになるかなあ・・・と思っています。
(14:40時点でPIEのスタッフから「OSを再インストールしてもNICが認識されない。
オンボードのNICが壊れているので月曜日(日本時間の火曜日)にPolywellに
持って行って交換してもらう」と連絡がありました。トホホ・・・)
