The DDoS target was 2ch this time and it caused network outage at PIE. Do you think 2ch is a pest for PIE?
A1.
Yes 2ch was the target of this latest attack.
Actually it did not take down the whole network, but it did slow down many servers.
2ch is not a pest.
It is the happiness in to many peoples lives.
If PIE thought of 2ch as a pest, it would be so hypocritical.
Many of the workers are frequent users of 2ch.
Q2.
Are you upset at those who do things like the DDoS? Are you thinking about some tit-for-tat sanction?
A2.
Of course I am upset about it.
However we are not vigilantes.
The attack was reported to the appropriate authorities in both the United States and another country.
If there is a sanction, it needs to be handled legally by the proper criminal procedures of the country that caused it.
Q3.
We have heard this DDoS was from Korea. Do you think Korean people actually did that?
A3.
Yes, I think a few Korean persons did it. Not the whole country of course.
Probably a radical University student.
I read on a bbs, (not 2ch) that it was because the Korean president was visiting, and also to commemorate the shootings at Virginia Tech.
I am absolutely sure that the Korean president would not attack 2ch.
It was just some angry person.
Q4.
PIE has recently upgraded core routers to new ones.
Do you think the new core routers are a cause for the network outage by the DDoS ?
A4.
Let me repeat, the Network of PIE was never out.
Certain servers at PIE were overwhelmed by the DDOS attack.
The new core routers are functioning well.
They are the same type of routers that NTT Docomo uses.
Q5.
In the future, if PIE experienced that DDoS again, do you think the network outage happens again?
A5.
Would you like a class on this?
The network is a strong 10 Gb/second network.
There are individual servers that were attacked through that strong network.
Those machines are what failed, not the network.
Q6.
It seems PIE network had a few troubles from the beginning of 2008, is PIE network OK?
A6.
During our upgrade to the 10 Gig network.
We had some scheduled downtime, but never went over the allowed time in our company SLA.
Q7.
Any messages to Japanese customers?
A7.
We are adding an addition fiber line to Japan sometime this month.
It will be one more redundant connection for us.
As it is now. We connect to Japan through Japan Telcom and NTT.
We are adding a third connection through another carrier, and also increasing our capacity through the current ones.
One of the carriers that we peer with had a bad fiber and took some time finding their break.
This did affect some people in the outlying areas of Japan, like Hokkaido.
Our network is not perfect, but it is very GENKI.
